Biography: Alfred Adler

Alfred Adler was an Austrian psychiatrist who was the founder of individual psychology. Born in Vienna on Feb. 7 1870, he began his medical career as an ophthalmologist, but turned to psychiatry.

Adler emphasized the role of organ inferiorities as determenants of the structure of personality. In his view, an attitude of inferiority develops when an individual feels deficient in comparison with others. Adler postulated a basic striving for superiority of self - assertion, which leads a person with an attitude of inferiority to seed to compensate.

For some years Adler was a popular lecturer and teacher in the United States, where his views were applied in education and social work. He died in Aberdeen, Scotland, on May 28, 1937.
